(First of all, thanks to Productive Dreams for the great Twitter icons.)
Whether you do it manually by checking your followers list or automatically through a service like TweetLater, automatically following every person who follows you is a pretty dumb idea, at least, if you want a lot of good followers.
“Well Gregg, if it’s such an idiotic act, why do people do it?”
Usually, for fear of those people unfollowing them a few days later. They want to keep their follower counts as high as possible, no matter what the cost and they would rather have someone following them for the sole purpose of having the following reciprocated than have no followers at all.
“So, whats the problem, the more the merrier right?”
Not quite, there is this little thing called the 2000 follow limit. You see, Twitter will only let you follow 2000 people at one time, and then, once you reach 2000, you can only follow an additional 10% of those people that follow you. So, lets say you have 2000 followers, and you are following 2150. Guess how many people you can follow before Twitter says “no more”…50. Yep, 10% of 2000 is 200, plus the original is 2200. Today, you can only follow 50 people. Kind of stunts your growth, huh?
No Two Tweeple are Alike
Here’s the thing, when someone follows you and then doesn’t bail on you a couple days later, do you know what that means? Well, among stalkers and people who don’t know HOW to unfollow, there are going to be a choice few of them that actually WANT to follow you. Imagine that, people following you because you tweet interesting, valuable stuff.
“Gregg, you are off your rocker, why would people WANT to follow me?”
Strange as it may sound, Twitter was not created to be a popularity contest but rather a way for people to connect and share. The purpose of people connecting was because they wanted to hear what the other had to say and are interested in what they do. So, when we autofollow people, we are going completely against the grain of Twitter, and pickup up useless followers along the way. Why not try to drive up your follower count by tweeting things people are actually interested in?
It’s Also Gween.
Think of Twitter like the earth, we all know that we can’t just keep consuming resources like crazy, we’ve got to cut back and allow mother earth to breath. On Twitter, we all know that they frequently get overloaded, by scaling back our follower count and not just following everyone and their dog, we will also be doing Twitter servers a small favor.
My Advice, Stop Autofollowing
So, aside from having room to follow as many people as you would like, not autofollowing will grant you a much more valuable list of followers. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.
